Sounds like you'll be getting a great setup, Grump! Now
the question is, the 3k or 5k...

I think the issue with the Naniwas is differential soaking.
I have noted that the outside of the hone "swells" soon
after starting to use it and then later the middle fills in.
I think it is related to the shape of the glue spot that
holds the hone to the stand and the shallow dish the
    hone sits/ soaks in.

If I just spritz the top with a water bottle or a wet hand the need for
    lapping is different.

I have started using my SS12k as a touch up hone and
if I spritz it the swarf pattern reflects a flat hone. If I
dunk and wash it I get a minor bathtub. If I promptly
lap it I get a slightly raised island 15 min later.

So for one razor touch up I just spritz the surface.

For a full rotation of razors I soak it the same
as the 4K side of my Norton and lightly lap it sometimes
    a couple times.

It sure is a fast cutter.

I love my Naniwas, and my Shaptons, but I love them as sets

For honing and then polishing I like the Nortons the 220/1k - 4k/8k can do anything, then you could just polish after with the Escher....

    Just another thought...

Pretty much either direction you go it should all work just fine..

Agreed. Naniwas seem to be all the rage right now but the (relatively) old reliable Nortons are still fantastic.

I have the Nani 1k, 3k, 5k, 8k, 12k. along with the DMT 8c. Lapping is very quick, so no worries there.
