+# on the Norton 4/8k it's a great stone set, I used it for 2 years before going to naturals. Yes you can shave off the 8k and a good strop. Elbow grease is alot cheaper than 12k stones if you want to play on the affordability side One combo Norton and a good strop will be plenty for maintaining an edge, as long as you don't have to fix a chip or ding.
