how are the brand name hones like CMON and DD
I am seeing more on ebay from razor company's that make hones.
Are they any good??
Also old Swatys are all over but are they better workers than lookers?
And lastly, I have a Naniwa 12K but wonder if I could still use a Coticule or Ecsher as another finisher...
thanks for any advise

Hi Kevin,
I can't comment on the CMON and DD barber hones, but I will say
that after the Naniwa 12k you could go to a final finisher. I doubt
that a coticule would be useful, but an Escher probably would.
Given that the edge off the 12k doesn't need much, you might be
best off with 0.5 diamond spray or Chromium Oxide powders on
the appropriate medium for a super-fine polish at a reasonable price.

+1 to what Scott said. The C-Mon, dubl duck dry hone and the Swaty are all good for what they were meant for. That is for doing a few strokes to touch up a sharp razor that is falling off a little. To refresh until you have the time to go back to your finishing hone. With a 12k naniwa you don't need anything else IMO. OTOH, if you like to play around with hones and honing the coticule and the finer Escher are fun to use and give different feels to the shave. All good IME.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

thanks for the input guys
I am looking into a nice coticule on ebay but it will run at least a buck and a quarter and if I have my facts right it is roughly a 4k/8k or a bit better and I do have my Nortons for that, but I was thinking different razors would react and give different feedback on different stones and variety is the spice of life
Ecshers name does come up quite a bit but never see them, or rarely at best on ebay. It seems I need to look into flea markets and such because I am hearing great stories of amazing finds.
I found that antique stores and the like here in the city deal more or less in jewelry and furniture, but I will do more research.
In the meantime I am working on my technique and practicing. Too bad I don't have anyones shoulder to look over or ask questions about razor problems. Well, I do have the videos and you all to bounce questions off of, but some things you just need to be shown, hands on.
Maybe the big meet on the 2nd will bare some fruit for me.
Anyway, thanks again for the words guys.

I would back up what have been said early and will add couple words.
DD AND C-MON ARE great hones but they do function a little different.
DD is a dry hone and mean to refresh the edge.
Example you feel your blade is getting dull make 2-6 strokes on the DD AND GO head straight to shave.
C-mon has a little more function then DD.
c-Mon does have 2 sides. course and fine side.
by using course side actually you will be able to sharpen the dull blade and finish on final side(branded side)
In the over hand you can use C-mon as i final touch up hone(branded side 2-4 strokes only .) Please pay attention C mon is so fast cutting hone +very fine edge leaving stone. if you do more then 8 strokes i am sure your edge will have small chips already.

Just about all of the hones with well known razor names on them like DD and others out there were actually made by one company out in the mid west. American abrasives or something like that and they just made them according to what the retailer wanted and then put the name on it.
There used to be a seller on Eboy-Tilly (redtrader) who bought all the remaining stock and was selling them and also sold the casts with the names of all the companies too.No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero
