    Default Red-ish/brown slurry?

Does anyone know of any natural hone that produces a red-ish/brown slurry? I ask because I have a natural stone that's doing the job of honing very well, but the slurry colour is redish brown, due to high iron oxide levels in the stone... (iron oxide being used as an abrasive compound I feel this all makes sense, but just wanted to know if any other natural stone produces red/brown slurry..)

    Thanks for any replies.

I have a japanese hone that produces a pink slurry and I have had other hones that produce a brownish red slurry and some that produce reddish slurries. I don't know if it is the oxide doing the cutting though but it would be nice to know.

Thanks guys, good to know there are other natural stones working like this. It struck me as weird since the stone colour is a greeny/blue, but when you rub it with a diamond plate you get this thick red/brown slurry - it's really unexpected..

I'll post some pictures when I've processed a block of it to look more like a hone.

    Cheers,
    - Mike

Sounds like you're liberating some type of reduced Fe2+ species (bluish/green) from the primary minerals in the stone which is then oxidized to a reddish hematite (Fe2O3) as the slurry is produced.
