La Rose Hone
Have any of you heard of a hone marked with La Rose?
The hone is 2 inch x 4 inch and looks to be a natural ( you can see a seperation where there is another stone color where attached to backing) with a slate back. To me it is a pinkish tan color. Tan side is approx 7mm in thickness. Backing is 10mm thick.
I have the hone and bottom of the slip top box, no box top and no labels. The bottom of box is yellow (not sure if that helps or not).
It does not look to have been used. It appears to be flat and is fine grit.
I will try to get some pictures of it up this evening or tomorrow.Last edited by scrapcan; 05-19-2010 at 01:54 PM.

Slate back...pinkish tan..."La Rose" is French, which I believe is used in Belgium around Ardennes...
Sounds like a coticule to me!

Curious but if all you have is the box bottom what is marked La Rose ? Isn't that a Spanish pronunciation ? Wouldn't French be Le Rose ? Anyhow, if the hone is marked with pencil or ink it may be a coticule but if it is embedded or embossed in the top of the stone on one end I would think it might be a barber hone ?

Thanked: 20It would actually take the feminine gender from the noun "rose" itself. "La rose" is french and is the correct pronunciation. Let me know if the rest of the text on the box is french, I could translate it.

more info and pictures
Sorry Guys I do have the hone and the bottom of the box.
No writing on the box other than the numbers 3269. I too think it is french and that the gender is correct from my long ago study of the language.
Here are some pictures. The black line at right end looks to be a mark form a black felt tip pen, there is not indication of a crack/fissure/etc...
The hone does not appear to have ever been used. A few small chips along the edges but once flattened and chamfered they will be gone with very little work. You can see the small chips in the endview and sideview pictures.
I too experienced a bit of HAD last weekend while presenting a display of antique reloading tools at a gunshow. I picked up this hone, a three line swaty, another hone I will posting in a couple of days, 2 strops, and 6 razors. One razor is a very large and in very nice shape c-mon blackie (I have not measured the width but I think it will be 10/8 or 11/8). But that is another post for another day.Last edited by scrapcan; 05-19-2010 at 01:56 PM.

You've got a beautiful natural combo coticule there. Might be glued but sure looks like a yellow/bbw to me. Congratulations and happy honing !
