Hello gents. I bought the norton starter kit, combo 220 1000, 4000, 8000 and it also came with a blue colored lapping stone. I have a 12k chinese naniwa water stone, Can i use the norton lapping stone to lap it? I just wasnt sure becuase of how fine the stone is and i Dont want to possibly ruin it lol. Any help would be great!Thanx guys!

Thanked: 1262When i asked the kind folks at srd about it last year, they said no.
this is what they said on 5/08/2009
The Norton Flattening stone is not good to lap these. They are resin bonded. Either the DMT coarse 325 or the Shapton GDLP would be recommended. We are also looking into whether Naniwa has something specific too.

+1, that Chinese stone will likely be too hard for the norton lapping stone. I wouldn't lap anything but the 1k, 4&8k with it. Get the DMT D8C 325 continuous plate and you can lap about anything. (not the 220 norton, sandpaper on a flat surface for that)
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

You probably want to double check what hone do you have. Naniwa is a Japanese not Chinese company and they make a lot of different hones.
Either way the Norton lapping plate is designed for Nortons and shouldn't be used as a generic lapping hone.

The DMT D8C continuous plate would be fine. The X or XX are alright too.
