I think Chris is on the money here. I have a bunch of old natural and glued Coticule combos, and many of the old ones get a brownish tinge from age to the BBW side, and even the Coticule side. I don't know how or why. I lap the stones to make them usable rather than for cosmetics, but lapping definitely makes a cosmetic difference. All of my lapped BBWs vary from deep purple to deep blue, like the newly mined ones.
My best Coticules actually tend to be the newly mined ones, most of my vintage Coticules are fast cutters but not-so-great polishers. But I just love the unusual sizes and fat thickness of the old ones. So, I try to find rough old ones for cheap, and rescue/restore them to their rightful place of razor honing glory. Vintage purists, please don't look at the photos below, it'll just break your heart....
Here's an old 2.5 X 5 X 1" "Barber Coticule" before and after (intense) restoration lapping. You can see the brownish tinge before lapping, and the plucked-fresh-from-the-mine purple appearance after lapping. I love this stone, it's actually a natural combo with a long-ago-repaired gap, but it looks like a glued one at this angle:

I agree with Tim. Here are some vintage coticules that HAD made me get. With some of them the contrast between the yellow and the bbw does look like chocolate.

Once any rock is removed from the ground where its at the surface and you crack it open you would find the inside often times looks way different than the outside. This is due to weathering and depending on the minerals (and of course we don't leave our coticules outside exposed to the elements) but stll over time and with use and exposure there could be changes.

Thanked: 3Sorry I couldn't get back online until now. Thanks for all the replies. Those pics, of the BBWs that were posted in this thread, look just like mine. That's what I mean...so dark purple(ish) and brownish looking, at least to me. I didn't think I was color-blind lol. Now I also have a new one that is a very blue color....no dark purple/brown hue to it. Just wondering why the big difference. Does anyone have a pic of a new BBW? I could post a pic of mine but it will be a few days.....gonna be a busy holiday weekend.
Thanks to all!

ChrisL has one in the classifieds that you can look at. IME coticules do vary in color. I have one that is pink through and through yet the slurry is the same as a yellow. Some with a greenish hue and others pure biege or yellow. I have one that is speckled with purple within the yellow and it is the best overall I've gotten. As for the blue side, there are subtle variations but not as distinct as that of the lighter side IME.

Here are mine, the one on the right is more blue than the others. The first 3 from the left have no Coticule side, I removed the Coticule of the first one myself, the fourth is glued and the fifth is a natural combo.
