Thanked: 13249New to me, Vintage Nakayama
So I just got a couple of new stones to add to the growing war chest this week...
I noticed quite a few stones coming up on e-bay, but not quite what I was after... I wanted a finisher, just a finisher, as you have heard me say on more than one occasion sharpening is pretty easy... Sharp and smooth is a little harder to get where you want it...
So I took a chance and sent an e-mail to one of the sellers 1194markr... Mark and I got to typing, I explained to him exactly what I needed and was after in a stone...After a few more e-mails back and forth he agreed to sell me one out of his personal stock...
This one is a Nakayama Midori Nashiji. possibly from the Tomae Stratum for all you HAD freaks that means stuff, for me it means I like the stone, after I tried it out...
I tried it out on a razor last night, went Norton 1-4-8 then finished using a very light slurry on the Nakayama letting the slurry dry as I went... I ended up with an almost mirror finish on the very edge of the bevel..
The shave this morning was smooth and comfortable, a very promising beginning with this stone... I suspect The Nirichi King Pelican Kamisori style razor will be the next one to caress this stone...
I'll get the exact measurements and pics up after work...Last edited by gssixgun; 06-08-2010 at 08:11 PM.

I don't know if it is true but I heard that if you point the end of the hone to the east and bow before and after you start honing the razor will be sharper and smoother.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 13249Pics !!!
Gosh darn demanding bunch hehehe
The stone is 7 3/8 x 2 5/8 x 3/4 in or 185 x 67 x 16 mm
OK here are all the pics
This first picture is the closest to the true color, and you can just make out the faint grains in the face of the stone...
I really like the stand that the stone is mounted on, BUT the Kanji are not doubt long gone, it did however give me a really good idea of what to do with the 7 x 1 1/2 in Escher stone I just got too, The Escher really needs a stand but I don't want to lose the label so I am going to snag a 8 x 3 by 1/2-3/4 piece of Plexi or Acrylic and make a stand out of that so the label will be permanently epoxied under the stone but still be visible through the acrylic...Last edited by gssixgun; 06-09-2010 at 04:38 AM.

Nice stone Glen..! Glad you like it..!
I must admit, my Nakayama is my favourite finisher by a mile. It just seems to impart this wonderful smoothness to the edge. I've no idea exactly why that happens, but I'm glad it does.
I'd be interested to hear how the Escher compares to the Nakayama in terms of smoothness?

That's a beautiful on,Glen! Thanks for making me want to buy jnats again with zero funds!
I just stack my escher on top of another stone with a towel in between, like a norton for example.
