    Default Micro abrasive film users

Do the micro abrasive film honers find that the jump between the 1 and 5 micron to be too large of a jump?

I'd love to hear the answers to this, too. Being too poor for any proper stones I'm trying, frustratingly, to get a shaving edge from an even bigger grit jump, since my local source stocks 15u and 5u, but not the 1u so I have to go straight to the 0.5u CrO film. So far I can only make things worse by the time I get to the 5u film, so I'm clearly in no position to make my own judgements.

Although, I've seen a thread where someone describes his ordinary progression from 5u to 0.3u, then 0.25u diamond paste, so I guess it's not a problem.

NiftyShaving talked about using the film a little here: http://straightrazorpalace.com/619631-post7.html

Maybe you could shoot him a PM and ask him to chime in here in more detail.

Well I've been playing around with the 5 and 0.5 micron films now for a while. I've yet to succeed in getting a shaving edge, but with my old toy microscope (50-100x on low power) I can tell that the 0.5 micron hones away the 5 micron scratches surprisingly quickly. Whatever's keeping me from a sharp edge, it isn't the film.

15u, 5u, 0.3u seem to work well. I use film on plate glass.
I do the equivalent of circles at the start of a grit.
If the bevel is not well set at 15micron the next two will be
hard put to improve the edge.

It is astounding how the 0.3u gives feedback when the
scratches from the 5u are gone. It sort of sticks to
the film..... when it does call it done.

It is possible to over hone at 0.3u and get a too sharp
edge. The second shave and normal stropping seem to calm
it down. Diamond dust 0.25u on canvas does not
seem to improve the edge. Just strop....

I do like to visit my 12K supertstone after a shave or
two as it calms and perfects the edge a bit.

Film wears, when it is done it is done.
