Thread: a little help?

my father gave me a stone. the box is marked"carborundum brand" and "razor hone" razor hone is in cursive writing. the box is orange and greyish. the stone is a # 106 and it measures 4"x2 1/2" does anyone have any information on these? what is it worth? how do you use it? ive been using it to sharpen knives with great success...thanks to all of you in advance.

The Carbo 106 is similar in size to the 103 but the 106 is a bit softer and more porous. Water just sits on the 103 but it soaks into your 106. The 106 is a razor hone and it produces a perfectly good edge. Like all barber hones, it requires only maybe 4 to 6 strokes to refresh a razor.

If you want to use it to sharpen knives, that's fine but it will likely ruin it for sharpening razors unless you lap it. Unlike most of the low number Carborundums though, that one is pretty easy to lap.

what is lapping? any ideas when this stone was made? ive no idea how to shave with a straight razor so i just use it for knives....im most interested in finding out how old it is...i like old...things were made of better quality back in the day

Lapping is the flattening of the honing surface. HERE is a description of how it is done.

Without seeing the box, I can't make a good guess about the age of the hone, but it is likely to be in the range of 50 to 75 years old.
