VINTAGE PIKE STROP HONE RAZOR SHARPENER W/ BOX ANTIQUE - eBay (item 160455077799 end time Jul-16-10 14:46:28 PDT)
This would be the perfect travel hone/strop setup for me but I have never had any experiene with the Pike brand. Does anyone know if their products are of high quality?

Thanked: 3795For the most part, the Pike hones were comparable in quality to the Swatys. Often, as is the case with the one you linked, the strop back can be in relatively poor condition. You might be able to restore it and make it functional, but you are still going to be left with a tiny strop. You might be better off with a regular barber hone and a cheap regular strop.

Thanked: 2209Pike was a very well respected mfg. I do not have extensive experience with that hone but I would not hesitate to buy it.
Just be sure to clean it, both sides, and to "soften" the edges before you use it.
Hope this helps,Randolph Tuttle, a SRP Mentor for residents of Minnesota & western Wisconsin

Thanked: 19My understanding is that Pike Mfg. Co and the Norton Emory Wheel Co. sort of co-evolved in ~New Hampshire in the mid- to late-1800's with Pike dealing with a lot of natural sharpening stones (for ag tools, etc.) and Norton dealing with other abrasives. Over time, Pike dealt extensively with hones, razors, strops, and many other things. Norton bought out Pike in the 1920s.
Yes - pretty well-respected stuff, if I'm not mistakenLast edited by Woodash; 07-17-2010 at 11:40 AM.
