What is the perfect size coticule?
I've been struggling with the idea that my new (vintage) monster coticule is more than enough for my simple tastes. Maybe it's the zen-taoist in me, but I feel almost guilty owning a stone this large (299mm x 67.5mm x 35mm, 4lbs 10oz) when a smaller stone might be just as good.
So if you could own any size coticule, what is the perfect size? (It might come down to preferences of hand-honing versus bench-honing.)
I'm thinking 8"x3" for bench-honing and 6"x2" for hand-honing...maybe?
Thanx,
Christopher

Largest size hones are very hard to find .
what size you would like ?
You are the only person can answer to that question.
The reason for it because it depends.
Some people like 5x2 keep it inside their hand.
some 7x1.5
some 8x3
everything depends the persons preferences

Chris, I have to be honest with you. I have run many tests and measurements and found that for my anatomical characteristics and honing style, the absolute perfect dream size coticule for me would be 299mm x 67.5mm x 35mm, 4lbs 10oz. If you happen across one, do let me know
Seriously though I like 8 x 2 for hand honing. I haven't found a size I like for bench honing. Maybe I just don't like bench honingFind me on SRP's official chat in ##srp on Freenode. Link is at top of SRP's homepage

I honestly haven't figured that out yet. I go from long to short to wide to narrow and I seem to like them all.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I always hone by hand, and I can hold my 8"x3" Shaptons and Naniwas (with bases), or my 10"x2.5" Charnley Forest (which is on a big wooden base) in my hands. Just not all at the same time lol..!
Then again, I have big hands..!
My coti/BBW combo is actually quite small though. Its 6"x2", and I almost find it a little bit too small..!
But to answer your question, the only thing to ensure is that you can get a good even coverage on the blade with your stone. You dont want it so small that its hard to keep the razor flat, and you dont want it so big that its like trying to hone on a paving slab. Other than that, its really personal preference..!

Every stone I have is the perfect size regardless of dimensions.
If it were not true I am sure they would have come to me differently. Why else would they continually become (nearly imperceptibly) thinner?
This is certainly not meant to exclude any that have since been resawn; even though saying I have done so seems to contradict my earlier statement. it does not.

To be honest, I'd like yours! What a rock.
A more useful size in my opinion would be 250 x 38mm (10"x1.5") Narrow enough to deal with more awkward blades, but long enough to cut down on laps a little.
I'd still like yours though.
