Looking for help in toronto
Howdy all,
Hope all is well today with you all, and that you all have been enjoying great shaves today.
I was hoping that someone would be able to help me. While i am not a newbie when it comes to straights, we all have something we can improve on.
For me i doubt my shave technique is perfect and my soap skills could use some touching up. But where i lack the most are my hones.
Ive had a select grade coticule for a while now and have used it to touch up my razor now and again but something feels missing.
I was hoping there was a member within the toronto area that has some experience with hones/coticules that i could maybe work with for a day to help me discover my stone better.
I know this may be asking much but if anyone has the time it would be greatly appreciated!
Once again thanks for your time guys (and girls) and enjoy yourselves!Shaving_story on Instagram

If you're so inclined, I'm in Rochester, NY. Actually, there is a meet coming up; maybe you could come to that - http://straightrazorpalace.com/get-t...-wny-meet.html. I'd offer to travel up, but I have no passport :-(

I'm not normally in that area but I can always try to come down for that.
Why have I never heard of any such meet for the Toronto area?Shaving_story on Instagram

Thanked: 3It's difficult to master this art. But by no means impossible. Your best teacher is yourself. Trial and error Flatten your coti, buy a cheap DOVO and practise on it. Once you get it sharp enough, dull the blade on a glass or by running the blade EDGE first (aka bread-knifing) along the hone and repeat the honing process again and again until you can master it. The secret to the prefect honing is a steady hand, equal pressure and a very flat hone. I lap my coti on a 1K 3M then finish it on 1.5K sometimes 2K grit. Remember, nobody was born with skills. We perfect our skills in time and by trial and error. Go easy on yourself, I'm sure you'll learn in no time but you need more practise
P.S. Equal pressure at all times and a steady hand

Thanked: 13245You might try a PM to Dan the Man or "Floppyshoes" on SRP he has been and still is one of the best there is on your side of the border,,, IIRC he is either in Toronto or Montreal...
I know he is a busy guy but a PM asking for help might get you a sit down meet with a guy that knows what he is doing...
The NY meet has been looking real good too, like Dylan mentioned if Dan can't help you out... With Dylan and JoeD there in NY, they can really get you on the right path, and no telling who else might show up...Last edited by gssixgun; 07-27-2010 at 03:22 AM.

I lapped my coti up to 1.2k sandpaper and the stone was perfectly smooth.
I have actually taken a few eBay razors to shave readyness but they just seem to be lacking a bit.
It might be that I can't get a perfect edge yet or that my coti isn't a true finisher. But only time will tell!Shaving_story on Instagram

Thanked: 3Basil, if you want to contact Dan (Floppyshoes) PM me. He is based in Montreal which is not far from you. He does restores / honing etc. He's great. I've used his services in the past.
