Just to ensure that my broken record keeps spinning, I'll once again point out that the Chinese hone is neither 16k nor 12k.

    Utopian

I have no experience at all with the Chinese hone, although back in my early honing days I did consider getting one. What is it then (in your experience) and why do our comrades refer to it as the 'C12K?'

There is one ad somewhere that said it's about 12k, but that has, as far as I know, never been confirmed or denied. For a while, I was calling it "The People's Hone of Indeterminate Grit" or PHIG, but it never caught on.

That's a bit of a mouthful! C12K just has that ring to it (IMHO!).

I'm certain that I have read that the edge produced off one (after hard labour) is comparable to a 12k Nani. Where, I do not remember.
