Thanked: 121Lifespan of nagura
I've got the opportunity to pick up some Asano Koma Nagura. I figure I've got a few more years of honing left and I don't want to be a hog about it, but these have been hard to track down and I don't want to start searching again a year down the road.
So how long does a typical Nagura stone last (how many slurries)? Should I get several, or should one be enough? At most, I hone a couple razors a week.
Also, are these things still being mined? Will there be a steady, if limited, supply in the future?

I'm not sure about the supply running out, but how long they last will depend on how much you use them..!
You say you only hone a couple of razors a week, but how much slurry do you use each time?
TBH, if they're becoming hard to come by and you like them (and they're not stupidly priced), I'd say grab a few of them now and then you know you're set for a good while. It would be really annoying to get just one, run out in a years time and then not be able to find a new one anywhere!
That said, I'd imagine a slurry stone lasting years rather than months. I've used mine a fair bit and they hardly look like they've been used.Last edited by Stubear; 08-10-2010 at 05:31 PM.

Typical Nogura slurry stones are pretty soft but still they should last you a very long time. I don't think the supply is about to run out.

What's wrong with being a hog, anyway?
