Can you try to scratch the stone with clean copper wire? Does it gouges the stone or not. What is the size of the stone?

Gentlemen, thanks very much for your information, it's all been very helpful.

Can I ask, are there ever any SMALL Charnley stones to be had? 6x2 or so?

I know these are slow hones, so bigger is better, but I fear that being located in the UK may makes the big stones unobtainable, as I refuse on principle to pay 50+ GBP simply for shipping. I don't mind paying for an excellent product, but considering that I've bought Nakayama hones for less than the cost of shipping a CF from the UK...it's kind of hard to justify. Sad, that.

But a smaller hone would not only be easier to afford, but also fit my preferred honing style better.

It is 7.25 by 1.25'' IIRC. I don't have any copper wire, but I scratched the stone with a 2 pence coin which is plated in copper and left a white scratch. Different story when whetted. The stone removed the copper rather quickly, turning the water dark grey. Not slurry, as the slurry is a white colour.

    Have fun !

    Best regards

From that test is hard to say as it was not done by clear copper as coim coppers are usualy made of alloy which makes them more durable. Normaly copper wire will scratch most of the slates but not CF.

I have 2 large Charnleys and they are both in excess of 10'', both by just over 2''.

I also have however, a 6 x 2 blue/green and red Charnley, bonded to a custom made wooden stand.
