lapping new natural oil stones?
Hi,
Is it a good idea to lap new natural oil stones? If so what should I use for lapping(sand paper, slurry stone, synthetic stone or something different?)
Thanks.

You should lap any new stone IMO. If you have a diamond plate (325) that is ideal. Alternatively wet & dry sandpaper on a flat surface will do. See hone lapping 101 in the SPR Wiki here.

Thanked: 1936Just start with a grid first to see the condition of your stone.

I don't have synthetic stones to compare to the stone. The oil stone is smooother than 1k sand paper though. Should I use 320 grit sand paper only? Do I need to make a progression (like 320,600,1000,2000)?

Some guys do a progression and you certainly can. I never have unless it was 120 to 325. I don't go above 325. Early on I lapped some with a 1200 plate but found out using the 1200 to lap waterstones would ruin the plate.

Will there be any difference between water and oil stones in terms of lapping?

Thanked: 1936You may add a drop or two of dish soap to the water when you are lapping, but there isn't much difference from what I have experienced. JimmyHAD has a bit more experience than most of us here...listen to him.
