Thanked: 3164Yes - definitely a tam and a nice one, too! The square section is often a giveaway, like this one from the old Carron Ironworks in Stirlingshire:
Some of the old texts recommend that this type of stone to be kept submerged at all times while not in use - it is supposed to keep it softer. Can't say I have ever tried it, though!

Thanked: 3164A thin oil gives (arguably) the finest finish, but water with a little dish-soap in it is a good alternative.
