    Default Coticule colours

    Howdy all,

I was looking recently at the Belgian brotherood page and saw how there are so many different colours that cotis come in.

I was wondering if any particular colour would be considered finer or coarser than others.

I know there are also many variables such as hardness or softness of stone. How wet you have it or how thick of a slurry you create. But what about the variable of the slurry stone?

For example I have two yellow cotis, one is soft but the other feels much harder during honeing. Also one slurry stone is a green colour while the other is patchy pink(like a yellow and pinkish cow)

Which combo of stone and slurry stone would theoretically give me the best possible edge?

the best will be test the stone ans a slurry.
By using low quality slurry stone you may lower the grit(example 8k will act same as 6k) of the stone and opposite.
This is why the best way to test the stone try to make slurry from the stone itself.
if you don't know how to test them try to find someone close to you. we do have members map may help.
coticules are natural stones and they do differ quality and color.
if anyone comes up and says to you yellow is better then red or vs vr will be making mistake. hope this helps

In my experience the pinker the faster and the greener the finer/harder. Maybe there are variables but that is my experience. One of my best cutters is yellow interspersed with pink bits. Reminds me of a pizza pie to some extent. I have a sold pink coticule that with slurry will set bevels. Not great for finishing but the fastest cutting coti I've seen.

I have two green cotis and both are slow. With slurry they seem to be similar to a 4k and then with water a finisher. The yellow creamy stones are also good and I've had some of those that were fast and others slower. You have to find how they work for you by trial and error.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Check out the vault and see the different colors and Bart's eval on each stone.
