    Default Barber hones

Stupid question. What kind of liquid do you use on a barbers hone?

    Not stupid at all.
Because most barber hones do not absorb water, it tends to bead up on the hone. If you add a small amount of lather, or soap, or detergent to water on a barber hone, then the surface tension will be broken and you will have a layer of water on the hone. That's what you want.

Yeah, just get your cheapest soap, wet it, and rub it around on the hone for a nice sticky, wet coat. That's what I've been doing on my Swaty with a puck of Williams, seems to work fine.
There are many roads to sharp.

Yup. Any soap will work. As long as it lead to the water not beading up on the hone, then it is doing its job.
