DMT indentation w/pics
I recently purchased another DMT 325 lapping plate and it showed up at my house today. The problem is right in the center is a 3mm indentation.
I know this is primarily going to be used for lapping, but it might be needed for sharpening at some point and time. Will this indentation be problematic if I need to sharpen something? and Should I return it to the seller?

Thanked: 2591unless the edges stick above the surface I do not think there will be a problem.
DMT has a very good customer service so you can call them and ask for exchange.Stefan

It would bother me too. I agree that it probably won't bother the edges. Especially once you either break it in with a plane blade or whatever .... or do some lapping. As Stefan said Dia Sharp is very good with customer service if you call them on the phone. IME they aren't quick on emails. They will give you an RMA # for you to drop it off to UPS and exchange it no doubt.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

It is driving me crazy! Yes, it will be used for lapping 95% of the time, but thats not really the issue.
The issue is that it is a rather expensive 'precision tool' and it should not be like that.

Thanked: 3795I can be very OCD about some things and completely lackadaisical about others. That tiny groove represents a tiny region lacking diamonds. I'd feel ashamed to expect the seller to have to cover the costs to replace such a slight defect that has absolutely no impact on the functionality of the plate.
It will have no impact on lapping and it will have no impact on honing.

+1. Also the issue of whether the area would begin to flake off in use. I wouldn't want to take the chance. It is plating after all. Give 'em a buzz. They're nice people.
