Thanked: 9Old Hickory Hone?
Found this hone, does anyone know anything about it? It's labeled "Old Hickory" "XXX Selection".
It's pretty smooth, but I'd like to know what kind of grain I'm looking at before I start using it. I'd also like to lap it on a piece of granite I have.
How can I tell if it's ever been used with oil? It's not greasy to the touch.
Thanks!

Looks like a coticule to me. Try scrubbing it with dish soap. The back might be a BBW...try making a slurry and see if it's blue/purple.

Thanked: 3795That is definitely a coticule. Don't even worry about oil. Just lap it and have fun with it. Actually, I'd lap it in a way so as to not eliminate the stamp. Keep the stamp! Like an Escher label, it increases the value of the hone dramatically.
