Thread: Naniwa super stone

I just have purchased a 12000k Naniwa super stone . But wondered how many laps do you need to average to get a super sharp razor ?

My shaving razors are ready but it could be slightly better.

When I use mine as a finishing hone coming off the 8k I do 20 X strokes before moving on to my final natural finisher.

The problem with the question you are asking is that it doesnt assume a standard sharpness before going to the 12k. How many laps you need and on what stone depend on what condition the razor is in to begin with.

If the razor really is dull then a 12k wont be enough to bring it back and you'll need to drop to a lower grit stone to re-sharpen the edge, perhaps 8k or even 3k.

From what you say it sounds like the razor shaves but is pulling a bit? In that instance I'd do 10 X strokes, strop and test shave and see how that edge feels. If its still not there dop another 10 and retest. If its still not there then you'll need to drop down a grit to bring the edge back.

The other thing I'd say is be sure you're not just succumbing to the temptation to play with the new toy..! What can often happen is a someone's razors are absolutely fine right up until they get a new hone and then suddenly all their razors need honing for some reason.

How long have you had the razor you're shaving with and how often do you use it? You should be able to get a good few months out of the edge with just stropping, assuming you look after the blade well.

Stubear has it right. For an already sharp razor, do a little, then strop and shave. If not there yet, repeat. Sneak up on it.

Thanks for the response. It goes with me to one who just missed the final razor sharpness. Have given him 20 laps and I have just shaved with the razor. Can say it is a clear improvement. Maybe tomorrow another 10 strokes and then he is ok.
That's why I asked what you are average number of strokes.

Hahaha, and yes with a new toy you want to get all the razors on the stone back.
But what good that's good.

I have gotten good results touching up shave ready razors on my 12k using Stubear's exact method. I usually do 10 laps and put the razor back into my rotation. If I notice the improvement, great. If I still feel like it could be better, I go back for 10 more laps. In the one instance where that did not work for me, I followed it with a small pyramid on my 5k and 8k and that did the trick.

This is something fun to try in the future with your Naniwa 12k

I use a DMT 325 to raise slurry on them myself, try about 10 of the Pigtail laps like in the video with a light slurry, then dilute it out to clear water for the last 10 see if you don't like the results.... You might try letting the stone go to almost dry for an extra super light, super perfect 10 laps too....

I think you might be surprised with the results...

I have bought at the same time a Naniwa Nagurasteen to clean the stone, but this stone also generates a kind of slurry.( according to the shop) I Will by the next time use the Nagurasteen to make slurry and then do the sharpening.... you never know maybe it's the same result.
its not a DMT 325, but who knows.
