    Default Carborundum razor hone

I just picked up an old carborundum razor hone made by the Carborundum Company (with the original box in vg shape). It states to use shaving lather for honing or that it can be used dry. My question is how do you clean the grayish gunk off the hone? I've used charcoal lighting fluid for years as a honing lubricant on natural stones (knives, broadheads, ect) and it will keep the gray off of stones. Kind of hate to damage this hone.

Well, I just used the charcoal lighting fluid on the hone with an old tooth brush and it took the gunk off. I washed it off with some Dawn dish washing soap and rinsed with warm water. I guess time will tell if I did any damage to the hone.

If you lap it with 400 grit wet dry sandpaper, the paper will remove the gunk while ironically preserving the hone.

Carborundum and Arkansas stones respond very well to oven cleaner.

Thanks, but the charcoal starting fluid cleaned it up great. No hone damage.
