Now that is an interesting idea. Very abrasive material from what I've read. I'd be interested in one of those too just for the heck of it.

Hey I want a Shark one and a Kangaroo as well:-) That booklet sure had some interesting material for strops. When he said most places have both of these types surprised me. Oh yea Dolphin was the other one.

Oh well I don't want to hijack the thread so I'll stick to Sham's post on the method of Coticule use he has a heck of a lot of knowledge to pass along--------------

(1895) Essay on Barbers' Razors, Razor Hones, Razor Stropes & Razor Honing

This essay from way back when straights were the only way to shave gives information about picking a razor and honing. One interesting thing is that the only hone a slurry was worked up on was a water hone like the Escher or Thuringian but none with a Coti-------
Just use the link above it doesn't take long to read.
    Wow,
Thanks for that link. What a differnet perspective they had. So many manufacturers, so many choices. The author puts razors in temper categories! How rich.

    Just another perspective on use.
There used to be a DVD available on eBay of an old fella who started the Laville Barber Supply company. On it he restores a razor & sets a basic bevel on belts & buffs & then hones the razor on a progression of 2 stones. A 118 Carborundum hone on which he used a soapy lather then finished it on a Coticule with the same soapy lather. He claimed 50 strokes on the Coti was his usual number.

I want to play with this experiment when time off from work permits me but I want to make it clear:

we are setting a bevel and finishing on one stone on just water? In the dilucot method you are to dull a razor on glass and then hone the razor to finish which takes approx. 15 minutes.

I will dull a razor tonight on glass and then hone on my droescher coticule with just water until finished, this in theory shouldn't take as long?

Nick don't do that you will get nowhere.
just add water and start honing. after 20-30 strokes you will have slurry when slurry gets dry add couple more drop of water and continue. don't wash slurry etc.
    this is it.
at the end you can make 10 very light strokes. avoid using too much pressure.

I personally like using my coticule with slurry and water. I find it capable of easily forming a nice uniform bevel.

What condition of the edge are you referring to?
Do you mean I can use a factory new blade and use the only water method,
or on a completely dull or restoration razor, or for touch ups only?

I agree with Lesslemming. What are the parameters of this test?

I did answer to your question on b$b basically do this.
start to hone your razor usually way.
i would never use coticule to set bevel but if you like to do so or have tried dilucot method etc go head try this.
use water and start to hone. simple . you will have slurry formation approximately after 20-30 strokes(there is exceptions which is very high quality coticules out there wont form slurry according to holli4pirating).
then keep it going until you get the edge you like. in your last strokes clean up the stone and make 10 light strokes just with water. check the time how long this will take compare to dulicote method.gl
