Thanked: 1Have I everything I need?
Hello,
I thinkI may have gone slightly hone mad - setup will be as follows:-
1200/3000 waterstone
5000 waterstone
6000/8000 Arkansas stone (never heard of this one before but taking a chance on it - looks to be an oil stone but will just use water with it)
Chinese 12k
I have a few fairly dull ebay razors to practise with before going at my TI..
Will the above setup suffice?
Thanks!

Thanked: 1from the pic, it looks to be a translucent light blue. Is that ok?
Yeah I agree, probably not the easiest setup to master, but I am sure with time, patience, a few mistakes - and a few cheap razors I will get there
Main reason I went the above route, is that I have all of the hones for around 70euro.

I'm shaving for over 5 years with a straight razor now, have 3 razors, and 1 coticule... And it does the trick for me.
One of the three razors is one I got from a hairdresser who learned to shave with it lots o years ago, and now used it to cut paper & cardboard in order to make neat packages of it. No matter saying it was dull
As I had recently bought another straight razor in Antwerp, and not having a hone yet, I went back to the place for some advice and a hone. He sold me a coticule, as it was all he sells for hones (we Belgians have to be a little chauvinist too, we've let the spanish, french, german... walk all over us more than enough!) and he sharpened all my three razors for me, including the dull cardboard cutter. That's when i learned the feeling of a sharp razor. It took him very little time to get em all sharp. With a bit of slurry on the stone, and some circular moves like Lynn shows in one of the youtube vids about a SRP meeting. And then a few strops on a strop with abrasive paste.
And that's the method i use since. Honing on a coticule with slurry, and finishing on a hanging strop with abrasive paste, held not too tight, so the edge really gets the feel of the strop.
But, as I've learned, reading lots of posts last weeks, and trying some stuff here and there, there are many ways to get your gear sharp, important to me as well is how you lather up, and how you shave, to keep your razor sharp for a long time, so you can hone (as was told me in the beginning) as little as possible...
Success with the honing, hope you get some fine razors out of it!Last edited by jefpunk; 11-14-2010 at 05:13 PM.

Thanked: 1thanks jefpunk for your advice, appreciate it.
Earlier today, I used the 12k just to touch up my TI - previously it would not pass the HHT, it does now with easeAll it took was a few careful laps - maybe 10 each side. Then around 60 laps on the strop.
