    Default Lap Naniwa 12K?

Does a new Naniwa 12K stone need to be lapped?

If so, can it be done on a DMT 325?

    Thanks,
    Paul

Yes, and the DMT will do a great job.

When I got my Naniwa 12k I spent 10-15 minutes lapping it with my DMT 8C (325; it was nowhere near flat. So the answer is yes.

That's what I use to lap mine, works great. Even as someone new to honing I have found the DMT 325 to be my most useful hone. I use it to lap my 12k and my Nortons, hone out frowns and chips and sharpen knifes. If I was to give up straight razors for some reason the DMT would be the one hone I would hold on to.

    Default Job done

Thanks for all the tips and comments.

This was my first "go" at lapping. I did a Norton 4/8K and the Naniwa 12K...all new stones.

Ryan was right: the Naniwa 12K was anything but flat, and it took
about 20 minutes to erase all the pencil lines. The stone was "high
center", bigtime...in both length and width.

All is well now. And yes, I chamfered the edges.

    Now it's Miller time.

    Thanks again.

    Paul,

I, like may others, have found the Naniwas 'settle down' after a half-a-dozen or so lappings (YMMV !!).

Mine was very un-flat when new, but after ca 18 months, it now requires very little lapping to get it ready for a session

The DMT 325 is very, very good for lapping all the Naniwa stones

    Have fun !

    Best regards

    Russ
