Lynn... I've always wondered if I could use Naguras on my Charnley to create a poor-man's JNat. It would be a much more affordable way to ease into Japanese methods than buying a ShoobiDoobie. Instead I could pick up lower-priced Naguras and try them. Any thoughts?

I don't see any reason why you couldn't. JimR wrote a nice blogpost (The 102nd Way to Skin a Cat (Kamisori Honing again) | Eastern Smooth: The Blog) about the wide range of techniques people use to get steel sharp and smooth. I say give it a shot!

the Tomo is a piece of the original hone though. I've done that too. At the last London RazorCon I used a full nagura Jnat setup and not only did I enjoy it, but it worked great! I was hoping to grab some naguras and use them on my CF.

Tomonagura is just a piece of stone not necessary the same stone. In my case Oozuko tomonagura.

If Robin Hood keeps up his game, we won't even be able to afford a Sherwood Forest, let alone the Charnley.

Sorry, it's late and I'm really tired.

Found this on a Japanese tool website:
Betsujyou grade has no streaks and almost pure white, suited for more finer sharpening. Tokkyu grade which is a bit more expensive has orange streaks that has stronger cutting strength, is more suited for quick cutting of harder alloys.
All pictures in the original post are Betsujyou, I think.

my experience with different colored Naguras, is that whites are the most aggressive, yellow ones not so much, I ended up selling my yellow Mejiro because it was so slow I could not use it. My white one is very quick.
