Thanked: 0Just got a Thiers-Issard
I Just got a Thiers-Issard 5/8 Taos straight razor and I am in the market for a honing stone even thought it came shave ready I know this edge wont last forever. I am looking only to maintain a great edge for this razor so preferably 10k-12k. I know that seems a bit high, but I feel this would provide a smoother edge resulting in more comfortable shave. I would like some feed back on which brands with links (to the site) are recommended for this range. I also have several much older blades which are in desperate need of honing to restore an edge so for these blades (which I will initially be using for practice) a double sided 4k/8k which from some of the feeds on the forums seems to be the best pyramid approach for setting an edge. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanked: 62I have been using my Naniwa 12k SS for touch ups on my razors and have been very happy with the results. I also have the Norton 220/1000 and 4000/8000 stones which I have found to be very simple to use. I use a DMT D8C to lap all of these stones. I am new to honing so take this with a grain of salt, the more experienced guys will be chiming in real soon.

gary8152,
The C135 TIs ,once dialled in, have, for me, kept their edges longer than any other of the eighty (80) odd razors I own.
They respond very well to 0.5 & 0.25 micron diamond on felt for touch-ups.
The Naniwa 10K or 12k also work very well for refreshing the edge when needed.
Good shaving
Have fun !
Best regards
Russ

I started with a 12k naniwa, and bought a 4k/8k soon after. Maybe I just waited too long to hone, but the 12k seemed to take forever.

Thanked: 0well thats cause the 12k is really only meant for a handful of strokes to set that final edge. It shouldn't be used to bring back an edge.
