It looks like a standard hardware store aluminum oxide oil stone. As for oil or water, unless it came pre-saturated in oil, you can use water or oil for lubrication. Once the stone is oiled, it will be an oil only stone from then on. I use a 1:3 mix of mineral oil and kerosene with my oil stones-although any light-medium weight oil should work fine. One thing I've noticed is that keeping oil stones completely drenched in oil really speeds up cutting time.

I think you'll find it a useful stone for setting the bevel on kitchen knives, plane blades, and chisels, but I agree with the others that it is too course for a razor unless you need to remove a nick.

If you need to sharpen a razor on a budget, you might try 1-4-8k SiC sandpaper or lapping film followed by your 12k chinese hone.

Well, I used the stone yesterday on a razor with nicks in the edge.
I put water on the stone. It is not very easy to hone as the blade stacks in the pass.
I noticed that it cannot hold the water not even for a couple of minutes, and you’re actually honing on a dry stone.

I think it would work better with oil.

Hello , i come from Hong Kong .
The grey stone is common in China but it is too coarse for grinding kitchen knives, not mention to razor.
There are som finer grade one ,also grey color , similar to japanese 500# whestone .
Anyway , now I use the followings to grind kitchen knives .
    1)China one #600-1000
    2)japan #1000
    3)Japn #3k to 4k
    4) jp #8k
I also have 10k but I do not use in this moment .

wooooha, get that razor off of that GRINDING stone, please!!!

These kind of stones usually consist of Silicon carbide, not alminum oxide.
But this doesn´t make any difference, as both are very good polishing compounds IF given the right quality and grit size.
    As yet to be said:
aluminum oxide might be a bit coarse for a fine razor hone
    Is not true.
Almost all sharpening stones use Al2O3 as abrasive, ask Naniwa

SiC and Al2O3 do have a crystal structure that can have many different sizes.
They all are (just like Cr2O3) theoretically available in any possible grit

Nonetheless, I am very positive that stone does not belong into a sharpening routine

I have used this stone only as a flattening stone to my Norton 220/1000 comb, Norton 4000/8000 comb, a Japanese natural stone (approximately 400-800), the Slovak natural stone (approximately 6000) and the Peoples’ hone.

I find the process of flattening very difficult and slow, especially on the natural stones.
Since I have no experience with any other flattening stone, I cannot tell if flattening itself is a tiring and slow process or it is done in a few minutes if someone has the correct equipment.

If the problem is the unsuitability of this Aluminium Oxide stone for flattening, I will consider buying a DMT 325 stone, but if the difference will be minimal I ‘d rather avoid buying another stone.

So, if somebody uses the DMT 325 stone to flatten similar with mine stones, please let me know if the process is easy and lasts a couple of minutes or is more time and strength consuming.

Another think is than this Aluminium Oxide stone has absorbed particles of the Norton stones, and it feels much softer and therefore less potent to flatten. Does this happen also with the DMT stone ?

Excuse me for the delayed answer; I just saw your post.
I bought this stone in an old store that was selling knives and climbing equipment in Thessaloniki in Northern Greece. So it is not easy to find. I bought it because I was really surprised with the low price.
I found a link of this store in the net:
    Petridi.gr | Camping | ????????? | ??????????

If you have no luck in communicating with them in English, I could help. However, I am not sure if they have any other stone like this.
