Get yourself a DMT8C (diamond hone, 8" in length, coarse 325gr). Put down something to keep your work surface dry, lay the DMT on the surface, wet it, then start to rub the face of the C12k against it. The C12k builds up a LOT of slurry real FAST, so you'll have to stop occasionally and wash away the buildup. However, it shouldn't take too terribly much to get a good flat surface on that hone.

Also, don't forget to put a bevel on the sides of the hone. You don't want them to get chipped, and you also don't want the irregular cut to mess up your delicate edges. It doesn't take much, just hold the DMT at an angle and rub it down the corners of the hone until you just start to see a smoothed out bevel forming.

Hope this is some use to you!

Default Diamond plate failure very possible

Robin, I don't know what prices are for D8C plates in the UK. I understand they're more costly outside the states. Mid $40s to mid 80s here. I destroyed one by following the method listed here. The C12k is very hard. No, I'm not worried about the diamonds, but about the nickel binder that holds them to the plate. If you're gonna use the DMT, the best advice I've seen (from Holli4pirating) is to do it either at the sink under running water, or under water in a tub or bucket.

The C12k will probably ruin a DMTc pretty fast, Its not designed for lapping
The xc or xxc should be able to handle it tho

Do you have a belt sander?

+1. I use a 12" x 12" granite tile ($10 at Home Depot) instead of a countertop. You can buy a lot of sandpaper for the cost of a DMT diamond plate.

I lapped mine with a progression of wet/dry sand paper. Started with 220 then to 400, then 600. Some guys like to go higher, but I found that since the chinese hone is so dang hard it will wear down the sandpaper. The 600 grit smooths out and leaves a nice surface. YMMV of course, but it 6 dollars sure beats the price of a DMT!

Good luck, I love my chinese natural. Leaves a great edge.

I just used 240 wet and dry paper and then smoothed it out on 1000 grit. I then rounded the corner a little with the 240. Worked fine.
