    Default Newby sharpening question

I am new to straight razor shaving. I have what might be a silly question.
I put myself through college as a meat cutter 30 plus years ago and still have all my tools and use them regularly.
Is there a reason that a steel, I have a ceramic steel, cannot be used instead of leather? The idea is the same, straighten the edge.

Welcome to SRP Mike. A steel or ceramic rod is much too harsh for the ultra fine edge of a properly honed razor. Here is the SRP beginner's guide in the SRP Wiki in case you haven't seen it yet. Lot of good tutorials in the Wiki on honing razors and everything else pertaining to straight razor shaving. Ask any questions you have as they come up though.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.
