Glass lapping plate
I scored well the other day, I wanted to get a piece of 1/4 plate glass to use to lap my hones. I stopped by the glass store not having any idea of what it would cost. He told me a 1 foot square would be $8, I almost laughed and he thought I was giving him a hard time and said well I guess I can do it for $5! I said great (and explained I was surprised at how low not the other way around) He came from the back room in a couple minutes with a square that had the edges ground and a label on it. He handed it to me and said here you can have this for free. It was apparently a discontinued color and the square was a sample piece and he was about to scrap it and then I walked in and he thought of it. Cool huh.

I needed something similar for lapping so I went to Home Depot and bought a single 12 x 12 smooth floor tile. I don't recall what it cost but it was very inexpensive. Works great too.
