Thanked: 0Honing System - Which stones
Hello all. I am currently looking at purchasing a set of honing stones for my razor. I already have the Kitayama 8K stone for finishing, but I'm wondering if I should get a 1K/4K stone, a 1K/6K stone or a different combination of stones for the bevel setting. I also will probably get a 10 or 12K stone at some point. Thanks

I would definitely get the Norton 4/8K. Just my opinion but it's the best stone for the money.

Thanked: 13245The normal progression is 1/4/8
BUT
I am personally not familiar with the Kitayama 8k so I could be wrong with this suggestion, I would wait and see if there is someone that answers that actually uses the stone that can help you more than I ...

Thanked: 4942I have a Kityama 8K and it will work for the 8K level. I tested it against the Norton 8K a few years ago and preferred the Norton from a consistency standpoint. But, If you already have the Kityama, I would build around it and use it. I would recommend the 12K over the 10 in the finishing department only because the 10K finishes are a little coarser feeling on the shave.
Have fun,
Lynn

The norton 4/8 combo is a well known stone among SRP members and very reliable. The stone you've referenced may be very good but I confess I never heard of it. The advantage in using a known stone is that if you run into issues members who are familiar with the stone can help with advice based on their hands on experience with the same stone.
For the 1k the Chosera seems to be the big gun nowadays. I've got one on the way and I'm looking forward to kicking the tires and driving it around the block. Not cheap but Lynn and Dylan say it delivers the goods. Chef's Knives to Go is where I got mine. Free shipping too.Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 0Well I already have the 8K as noted above and I don't want the Norton to be honest with you. I like the japanese/chinese stones better. I also see King has a 800/6K stone.

Thanked: 0The norton 4/8 combo is a well known stone among SRP members and very reliable. I have personally used it before with my Tramontina chef knife which i bought from smokekitchen after reading a review. Here's the Tramontina chef knife review on smokekitchen
The honing stone they have seems to be the big gun nowadays. I got recommended it by chef's knives to go. they gave me free shipping and everything. Hope that helps!
