    Default Norton 4/8k Slurry

    Hello all,

Does a Norton Water Prep Stone or slurry stone have to be used on a Norton 4/8k? Can a Coticule slurry stone or any other slurry stone be used on a Norton 4/8k?

    Thanks

are you new to honing? then No . don't use anything just make wet and hone your blade.
if you do have experience then you can use
    coticule slurry
    Japanese slurry
    chro2
    cerium
    escher slurry
if you like you could mix them up and test see what happens.
if that wont be a good enough
    this is a new method.
you can add pastes to slurry stone and mix them up .(by the way this is brand new not so many people have tested yet.
    all above is test purposes.
    have fun.

Like Sham said, learn to use the stone first the way it works without anything added and figure it out.

I have had the Norton for a few years now and I love that hone, it's my favorite tool. I do use a slurry like in Glens video where I refresh the surface and dilute the slurry left on the stone. I don't use the Norton Nagura to make a heavy slurry to set a bevel though.

Yes, I am new to honing. Been at it now for a few months. Here's my setup: 800, 1200 Japanese water stones, Norton 4/8k, and a 12k Chinese. I also have a number of different materials with CrOx (hard felt, felt, leather, balsa, etc). I can set the bevel on a couple of my vintage blades and they give me a very good shave. Very smooth. I am very satisfied with what I have right now. I also have a new razor that I sent out to Lynn to have as a reference.

I have ordered a DMT 325 to lap my stones. I was using 320 wet/dry sandpaper to accomplish a flat surface.

So I would like to give the slurry a go. CrOx and slurry? I'm intrigued. Sounds like fun.

Thanks so much for your replies.

My question still remains, for a Norton 4/8k what slurry stone can be used on it? I have seen ads for Norton Prep stones that are only to be used on Norton's so it says. Can I use any slurry stone on a Norton 4/8k without damaging it or the slurry stone?

Thanks for your opinion on your use of the Norton 4/8.

Slurry stones used to make slurry on the hone.
The idea is slurry stone will be finer and softer then original stone.
Now everything depends what is your intentions are.
You can use fine stone and coarser slurry stones and sharpen blade from scratch to shave ready condition.
Or you can use harder slurry stone or dmt plate make slurry from original stone.

if your slurry is harder then norton 4/8k you will not damage the norton .(lets say your slurry is flat stone you wont dish the norton)
if your slurry stone is softer then your norton 4/8 k then you may end up slurry comes out from slurry and courser then 8k then your edge will be duller then 8k edge without slurry.
    hope this helps

That 325 DMT you have coming will create a nice slurry on any stones, kill two birds with one stone, er or plate.
