Thanked: 13Honing Advice Joh. Engstrom Eskilstuna
Hello - I am a beginner honer but have had success with a number of Ebay specials including a Dbl Duck, a few Fox's which I love, a Black Demon and a Boker.
I bought a Joh. Engstrom Frameback with Dannemora-Gjhtstal engraved on the spine and have been having a heck of a time getting this arm hair snapping sharp.
I have a Naniwa set of 1K, 3/8K combo and have a few good barber hones I use upon finishing.
I think I set the bevel right and have been using pyramids to try and get this baby in shape and while it's sharp - it's not beard incinerating sharp. Has anyone dealt with this particular razor? Are framebacks not for the faint of honing heart? Any advice would be great. I know I could send this to an expert to hone it up but I bought a bunch of Ebay razors over time so I could learn to hone without destroying an expensive piece and have done okay so far and this is a brick wall for me.

if your not cutting arm hair off the 1k dont go any further i dont move off the 1k until i can cut arm hair by running the blade across it ( not at skin level ,above )

last picture shows you have bevel.
Now take pressure off and make 50 strokes.
then move to 3k and make 50 strokes . check the edge ?
Any improvements or not?

Thanked: 13245You are using almost the same progression I use on those razors
Naniwa 1-3-8 then I finish them off on believe it or not the Chinese 12k or PHIG
Gives them a really nice smooth edge..
I think Sham is dead on with his advice too

How about the bevel marking test? Is the bevel in touch with the hone along its entire length on both sides of the blade?

Ok now we will need to go back to 1k and make more strokes.
i think you stuck with hard steel.
stay on 1 k until you will cut the arm hair.
then you move up to 3k.
let us know what happens
