Darkish Hone ID help
It doesn't really look like any of the stones I have lusted after, but it called to me and couldn't resist.
haven't handled many, but at least those that I have kinda looked like others I had seen pictures of... It was dense and heavy, but light at the same time.
The surface is smooth and hard, but can be scratched. It has beautiful waves of black and greys and some browns spots. It didn't seem to harm the edge off my coticule, but I may not have spent enough time on it to affect the edge. It did feel like a great edge, but not so much different from my coticule and nakayama edges, but that isn't saying much.
the quarry of origin and general reputation? can anyone help me identify this stone?

It looks like this little stone of mine. It came from Germany. I don't know if it's a Thuringian.

Judging by its looks and your opinion that it does not harm your coti's edge, Id say it was a stone of Thuringian origin. I have seen pictures of similar ones to that with the array of colours.
Can you post picks of its slurry?

This is a brown (ish) Thuringian with a similar pattern. I believe yours is a blue variety.

thanks for the comments. The seller did call it a dark-blue thuri, but I didn't want to bias anyone because it doesn't appear to me to look like any dark-blue's i could find pictures of...
I lapped it, did about 60-80 passes on my TI and the edge was super smooth and sharp to boot. How many passes ideally on a thuri are people doing?
here are some more pics. as it was raining outside I took some pics with some better lighting. The fork is jet black and the mat is kind of egg-white place mat. It used to be white, but with age it has turned a bit off-white

i did try the stone twice, as I tried to get across above.
once for like 20-30 passes, i can't remember but the edge was just ok
second time ~70 passes and the edge was sweet..
I just wanted to know what i had in hand, since i hadn't seen a pic of a dark thuri that looked like this...

It depends on the Thurry itself and obviously the size! I have a 1 x 4'' Thurry that I do about 50 passes on whereas my Escher I may do less.
I have heard Lynn say somewhere around 20 passes on an Escher, whereas Hi_Bud (Sham) may have said around 40-50, and various other authorities have been close to the latter; so its not entirely clear.
If I come off an 8K, Ill typically do 10 passes with slurry watering it down so the last 10 are pure water, having around 40-50 perhaps in total.
