Resetting a wedge bevel on a Norton 4k/8k?
I just got a cheap ebay razor to practice honing on, and it said it was shave ready. As I expected and almost hoped for it's nowhere close to shave ready. It's a wedge shape with a very small, but intact bevel. Would it be possible to get a good edge on a small wedge bevel with an aggressive pyramid on a 4/8 Norton or do I have to get a 1k and completely reset it?
I'll see if I can get some pictures up in the next hour or two.

It most certainly can be done, the question is how fast and that depends on how far off the bevel is. A slurry on the 4k side will speed things quite a bit.

Ok, here are some pictures:
I'm worried about the edge on the heel of the blade. Will it cause damage to my hone because it's not flush with the hone surface?

Throw it out... that thing will never hone up.

Sorry to say it, but that is not a straight razor. That is a RSO, or "razor shaped object." You can find more on the list of brands to avoid in the wiki. (Too lazy to find the link, sorry.)

Thanks for your input. That really sucks , I was hoping I could practice honing on it. I guess it's not too much of a disappointment, it only cost me $9 and that includes shipping.
I'll stick with my Prima Klang until I find a real razor to practice on.

I am not being sarcastic but if you stay away from the heal you can hone the rest of it up and use it as a box cutter. This way you can at least practice turning the razor and training you hands and challenging yourself to get it as sharp as possible.

MattCastle,
When you get a 'proper' razor, there some excellent video tutorials that feature the Norton 4/8 k
GSSixguns most excellent video series (probably the best I have seen)
YouTube - gssixgun
and particularly the Norton 4/8
