Default C135 Carbon Steel from Thiers

Wondering what, if anything different, should be done in order to hone this new steel! Have any of you found it necessary to employ additional steps to get the "New Thiers" shave ready? Anyone found a preference of Jnats in order to work these new materials? Would really appreciate input and thanks!

I am not sure about the steel number etc but i do know new Thiers while you hone don't worry about the Japanese stones.9WHICH IS USUALLY FINISHING STONES)
    Try set the bevel.
they are so hard steel will take huge time (4 times more time) to set bevel on them. after that you should be ok.
    hope this helps.

I haven't had to mess with my Crownwing yet but my original Silverwing? Good luck. They are a bear to hone so plan on spending some quality time on the hone. I did mine in stages over several weeks or really make it months only because the shaving characteristics were very different and as I honed it they changed and I wasn't sure when to stop to get it fully dialed in. I used my Coticule and my Escher and some .5 diamond and chrome oxide. I just kept going back and for on the stones kind of like a pyramid of sorts. Maybe the newer ones are easier. I hope so.

I have one C135 TI. Mine was sold as shave ready from a reliable vendor, so it was sharp from the start. Just not sharp enough for a comfortable shave like my other razors. My honing experience with it were similar to thebigspendur's. It took a while to get it there. Shave one day, hone it, shave again, hone it some more, etc.

Mine has a slight smile so that adds a bit of challenge. Also, the steel seems very hard... you wonder if the properties of the steel change any as you remove the virgin edge. I had some chipping after one session. So lately I have been using one layer of tape. I've seen others recommend two layers and or pasted strops.

I've honed it on several different systems and didn't find any noticeable differences in the results (at my skill level).

I have a TI fox and roaster C135. Same experience as Matt321... Bought shave ready but not enough sharp for me. Took maaaaaaaany sessions to have a good edge. Once you get it will maintain long.
Hard work in front of you

I go straight to my Naniwa SS set for those 1-3-5-8-10-12 that is what seems to get me where I want to be consistantly...I use the Naniwa system I described here and exactly the way I showed in my Naniwa Honing vids here

This works for me on all those super hard razors, and most importantly it leaves the smoothest shaving edge that I have found on them...

I have really not noticed any additional difficulty in honing these either, although I do make sure I set a bevel on all I get to hone including the new ones. Typical 1K, 4K, 8K, 12k or natural for finishing followed by 10 light strokes on .5 diamond spray on felt and we're there. The on difference I have noticed is a little harder feel to the steel.

    Have fun,

    Lynn

Lots of trouble with my Silverwing. Only hone it seems to like is my Mauchline ware TOS.
