me personaly i dont like the 1k to 6k jump thats 6 time finer i like a stone progression of 1k 2k 4k 8k 12k or 16k see how i double the grit progression but if thats not in your price range go for the norton 4/8k and a king 1k or boker 1k that all should be under 100$ but to answer your question the 10k or 12 you should learn how to shave off the 8k before you move up in grit range tho

For the money, I would go with a King 1k and a naniwa 3k/8k OR Norton 4k/8k. This set will benefit you very well, and give you very good shaves. Get a cheap chromox paddle strop, and you will get magnificient shaves. You can get the finer stones later, you won't get better edges with finer stones until you get the most out of your 8k stone. Again, you can get very good shaves off a 8k, without pastes. With pastes, it will be even better.

I have and use the King Icebear 1K/6K and it is a great stone. The King 1K level is more like a 2K so the jump is not that great. I like the fact that the 2K level takes a little more working time on the bevel set. Less chance of chewing up a spine. I wish the stone were wider. Then go with the 8K. You can always get a finsiher later on. My 2cents. Have fun.

    Thanks for the replies guys.

As most of my razors are already to shave just, I want a good higher grit so will start with the Naniwa 8000 and the King is just to learn bevel setting and getting out nicks in old blades.

    Cheers
