    Default Apart hone grit?

    Hey guys,
I never knew there was so much to straight razor shaving before I attached reading your threads. You guys know your stuff. I have an j.r.Torrey 5/8 round point and am trying to get it ready for my first shave. Honing seems pretty straight forward but all my reading tells me it is a fine art. The razor was fairly sharp prior to taking 10passes on the Apart hone. My jewelers loupe shows a nice saw tooth pattern and I am about to take it on the strop when I get it. The razor had shown wear on the spine so I did not wrap electrical tape when honing. Does anyone out there know what grit the apart hone is? Thanks for the help in advance.

I would guess around 8000, could be lower or higher. Sawtooth pattern is not a good sign.

It sounds like it may be "Knife Sharp", but not shaving sharp.

There is just so much wrong here,,,,

I honestly don't even know where to start... other than to say we have a Wiki and there is a Beginners section

The Apart Barber's hone is of unknown girt just like every other Barber's hone and they are most all capable of a shaving edge, that really shouldn't look like a saw edge

Thanks guys. I have read many barbers hone manuals. Or at least what I could find. If I am wrong sorry but all of them said there should be a very very subtle cut marks on the edge under a 10 x jewelers loupe. I guess I should say I see the cut marks coming at an angle from the blades edge toward the spine from the hone work. Is this wrong after an X pattern is executed?

You are talking about the Striations from the hone on the bevel, and Yes that is correct... Sorta
You need to strop and try a shave that will tell you much more then anything we can..

Basically you are not giving any of us enough info to help..

Was the razor shaving before you honed it???
Was it professionally honed in the past 6 months by a "Reputable SR Honemiester"

There are just so many variables that you are leaving open here

That makes much more sense. I was trying to think of when a saw tooth pattern would be beneficial.
