    Default Swaty + emery board = ?

I recently won a Franz Swaty hone on eBay and was perusing the others on sale where I saw in in part of a picture of one Swaty on sale say something to the effect of "when the stone becomes too smooth to hone, use a fine emery board"

Is this right? What kind of emery board qualifies as 'fine'. How should the stone be rubbed - straight up ad down? Circular?

    Cheers

    PenSword,

I think this refers to when the surface of the stone gets clogged or 'glazed'.

As Swatys are quite hard, I think gentle cleaning with a green Scotchbrite kitchen pad & some mildly abrasive kitchen cleaner like Vim would be good.

You could also use ca 400 or 600 grit silicon carbide paper on a flat surface, using a 'Figures of eight' motion. Use plenty of water with a little dish-washing detergent added.

Utopian would be able to give much more sage advice than me on Swatys

    Have fun !

    Best regards

    Russ

Russ is spot on AFAIC. Scotch brite, maybe with a bit of Comet would be cool. Worst case scenario lap the stone with a diamond plate or sandpaper. IMO the old barbers just used them as they were with the x stroke but who knows ?
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.
