Thread: OH NO...

I bought a naniwa 12k localy about 2 weeks ago for $125, and i think i really like. But tonight my daughter knocked it off the shelf.

Onlyt one corner broke off completly, but there are 4 or 5 cracks runnig through the whole stone. If i lap it is it still usable? I cant really afford another.The cracks are the whole depth of the stones so i wont be able to get rid of them. I will try to get some pics up later

I can't help much but i heard in another thread that they used some kind of epoxy to secure the cracks then lapped the stone. I hope the guy who did that chimes in to help you... Pictures would help.

I'm sorry to hear that!
I haven't had that happen to me, but I'm sorry to say that it sounds like it is toast.

The corner can be rounded out easily enough, but the cracks can be big trouble.
The Naniwas are quite soft and will swell and sort of move around a bit under various conditions(moisture), so how you are gonna keep those ares flat constantly I wouldn't know.

I hope I'm wrong, but it doesn't sound too good to me, to be honest.

Yeah i am guessing that it is pretty much garbage. Its in very bad shape. On the bright side the naniwa broke the fall of my cheaper stones and they are pretty much undamaged.

TG it wasn't an Escher!

Look on the bright side - it's easily replaceable and it is possible to obtain an exact copy. May not be what you want to hear, but certain naturals can never be replaced.

If you have any decent sized pieces, you may be able to remove one from the base and use it almost like a barber hone. And you can always use the rest as slurry stones or to create slurry to strop on or something.

You might find that you have some very good rubbing stones so do not toss them.

I once touched up a razor with a 1"x1" Coticule rubbing stone because the
it was handy. It may be nicer than my bigger Coticule hone, I wish I had the
big brother that it was cut from.

Some barber hones are tiny 3"x1.5" do not toss the bits unless
you toss them my way.

I would NOT try to run a razor over those cracks. But as others have said, keep the biggest bit for a barbers hone, and the others for rubbing stones. Could be worse.

I weep with you. It's hard to shake loose $125 for hone when soon that may be the price of a tank of gas!

I don't have little ones in the house anymore, but I keep my hones in a separate plastic tool box at the back of my work bench for fear the missus' will drop them. I also keep the razors I'm working on in the same place.
