    They most likely would have taken them to a cutler to be sharpened. Most likely on whatever type of natural stone they had handy, weather an arkie or a thuringen or coticule, etc...

    Back in the day they used the best of what they had. Today, I think we should use the best of what we have instead of limiting ourselves to only what they had.

    Back in the day if their barber hone did not do the needful they probably went to their local barber/cutler.
