Tosuke on Coticule?
Sorry if this thread's been done before, I can't find it if it has but my iphone browser is having problems with the search function...
Anyway, I have a tosuke that's not shave ready, and my only honing setup is a coticule/bbw combo, it's vintage so no vein info. I have read up on technique for honing these Japenese style guys, and I gather that Jnats and 12ks+ are usually recommended. Can I use my Coti or the BBW side to the same effect?
Thanks for any info, regards
Nate

Thanked: 4942You should be able to get a very nice edge on the Tosuke from your Coticule. Probably shouldn't need to hit the bbw side. If the razor is in decent condition, I would start with a medium slurry and use either a 10:1 or 10:2 ratio a few times, drop to light slurry and then to water and you should be shaving. After the medium slurry sets, you many only need 1-2 sets on the light slurry and water.
Have fun,
Lynn

+1 to what hi_bud said but you're saying it is not shave ready makes me wonder how far from shave ready it is. You can still do it on a coticule, preferably beginning with slurry but it may be a long haul, depending on the particular coticule, and most of all, on your skill level. Go to the SRP Wiki honing section for further info on honing methods specifically addressing the coticule. You might also look up threads in advanced search on honing a kamisori.
EDIT; Lynn posted while I was typing, + 1 to what he said also.Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 13249In this thread at the bottom is a Kamisori honing video... I start with a Coticule for the edge
http://straightrazorpalace.com/video...-gssixgun.html
IMHO and I emphasize that, I myself don't think that a Coticule has the upper end reach to give the edge the "Sharpness" for a Kamisori, I use it to create a nice sharp haze finish that I take to a higher stone...
I personally think you will be missing the real experience of using a Kamisori if it isn't the sharpest razor that you own

Thanks gents. I am a relative newbie to honing in general, I've only done a handful of razors and only ever used the coti. I've been debating getting a couple stones to fit around it like maybe a 4k and 12k.
I'm actually not sure of the state the razor is in, as it's in transit. It was purchased from a trusted source; all they specifically said was that they hadn't honed it. I guess I could ask but it should arrive soon

I use the coticule on my Kamisori's and get a great result. Is it the ultimate? No, you can do better. I've used my Escher and my Shapton 30K and CrO and even diamond paste to go further.
