pictures are very fuzzy but the word carbo usually means silicon carbide and depening on the stone density mite be able to use on a razor and definitely could be used on a knife

I suspected this because I got the hone from a professional barber!

Thanks! Compared with a Norton 8k and a Chinese 12k, it seems to be intermediate! Excuse the bad photos, will provide better and post after.

Your hone is not intermediate between a Norton 8k and a Chinese hone of no particular grit. It is a maintenance hone and is to be used in an entirely different manner.

    Dear Utopian,
I use the Chinese 12k for maintenance. Which the best way to use this?

I'm not sure if you are asking about the Chinese hone or the barber hone. For the barber hone, just do 4 to 6 light strokes on the wet hone. If water beads up on it, then add a slight amount of lather and mix it with the water on the hone to make it uniformly wet before the honing. For the Chinese hone, since they vary in their cutting capacity, I would suggest that you start with 25 light strokes, though with experimentation you may find that you need 50 or 100.

For either hone, you want to do the touch up as soon as you notice that the razor is not shaving the way it used to. That is the time to go to either of the above strategies. After the honing, strop and shave. If the shave is fine, then you are done. If not, then repeat the above. You can increase the stroke count on the Chinese hone, but don't increase it on the barber hone or you risk microchipping the edge. Maintenance is easy if you do it as soon as you notice the shave is diminished.
