Thank you for the concern, Lesslemming.
I was never deployed on ship, I was flown to my bases. So, I'm sure there is a space concern. The space needed for my suggestion--8"x3"x1 1/2"
I will bet money on the DVD player being on board, though.
UPS Rocket Service, love that one.
Always wondered how the sailors got their packages delivered.
No Lesslemming, I did not misunderstand the question.

If her husband has the means to store and use (one or several) waterstones I would recommend the Norton 4k/8k as well
So the options are:
- Norton 4k/8k combination stone (maybe + Shapton 16k, or a polishing compound)
- Barbers Hone
- Coticule
The Norton 4k/8k and the Coticule are both capable of getting a razor from
bevelsetting to shaving sharp.
A Barbers Hone is good for touch upsLast edited by Lesslemming; 06-25-2011 at 09:05 AM.

Welcome to SRP. We at SRP are a hone happy bunch of guys and usually go top shelf on our gear. If all your husband needs to do is maintain an edge the Barber's hone is a good choice w/o going over board ( ). The Swaty is a very popular Barber hone. I believe Glen (GSSIXGUN) was selling Barber's hones. He may not have a Swaty but I am sure he will have something to fit the bill. I would also suggest he has more than one straight razor to switch to when the first goes dull. Check SRD (Straight Razor Designs) for a shave ready razor. All are good from SRD. You should be able to get a Barber's hone and an additional straight razor for less than the price if a coticule or set of other hones. Good luck.

Dechire
I totally agree with Joed, your husband would do well to have a second razor as a back-up. This way he can rotate and as he is learning to hone he can still shave from the one that is still sharp. I have a small Japanese Natural that I would be happy to send him at no cost to his APO. It is the type of stone that will give him a good shave and an introduction to naturals which is where lots of users find some pleasure in the shaving world. You can send me a PM anytime. Best of Luck to you and yours, alx

Thanked: 1936I'm a veteran of the Navy and space is quite a precious commodity aboard the boat.
The offer of the free stone from "alx" is great! That can take care of finishing/touching up the edge.
There are many suggestions, but I have to agree with the recommendation of a second razor and a combination coticule/bbw would serve him best.

Thanked: 0Thank you all so much for the responses! I got caught up with life. I actually forgot about this thread until the hunt for the honing stone came up again.
My husband is currently reading your advice and we are going to purchase a stone in the near future.

Back from deployment
All of you, Thanks so much for the warm welcome to my wife! Thank you all also for the feedback with minimal information on the situation. and specifically, Alx for the offer of the stone.
@Shooter74743 - Yes, Golden. Since 2003
Also, we get our mail much the same way as everybody else...USPS, the united stated postal service. we just use ships and helicopters too.
I got the razor I am currently using from Lynn Abrams here at SRP, he sent it to me shave ready and all I've been doing with is is stropping before use.
It's now gotten to the point that no amount of stropping will do much good. It pulls regardless of what I do with it.
With that in mind, would I still need just the barber stone or would it be best to go with a combo or coticule?
Thanks again for all the advice folks! I really appreciate it!Last edited by Brennan; 10-07-2011 at 07:14 PM.

Thanked: 1587It depends on where the razor's edge is, really. If it just needs touch ups then you could get away with a barber's hone. But if the edge ever gets damaged or you need to reset the bevel for whatever reason, you'd be at it a while with the barber's hone and may be grateful for a BBW/coti combo, or some other combo stone (Norton 4/8, ... whatever). I don't know how likely edge damage is aboard a Navy ship, but I'd hazard a guess it would be slightly higher than in a normal bathroom?? Or is that not a concern now you are back from deployment?
