Default Naniwa 12K porous...and dryes up.

    Hi guys,
I've problems keeping this hone wet as it dryes up in just a few minutes.
What do you do to keep the water on the surface?
Do you soake the stone for some minutes?
    Thanks.

All of my Naniwas do this, especially the 8k. You can either keep rewetting it as it dries or soak it for a minute before use.

I have found that they warp slightly as you soak them, so the best thing to do is soak them and then lap them, rather than lapping and soaking afterwards.

    Hope thats of some help!

+1 to what Stu said. I don't remember the 12k and don't own one, but my 8k dries up rather quickly. I usually add more water between each razor.

A big part of my recent Norton purchase is that the Naniwas have begun to annoy me. Can't soak them, but the 8k dries up real fast. Gotta let them wet and stabilize before lapping cause they warp when wetting and drying. Extremely inefficient for only honing a razor or two because of annoyance 2.

They do give real nice edges, though, and are a pleasure to hone on. I guess nobody's perfect, and no hone is either.

I usually just wet the surface and then hone, adding a couple drops if needed. But since this is a finishing hone, and 10 laps or so is all that is required (taking all of a few seconds to do), then drying out shouldn't really be a problem.

They ARE thirsty buggers. I appreciate Stu's input.

I'm only about a month w/ a 12k and 6 mo. w/ an 8k. The 8k hasn't seen much use since getting a coti, but I've run into 2 blades what wouldn't respond to anything else (2 cotis, & a norton). It was Nani or nothing. I'm sure those more skilled would have found additional remedies, but the Nani came through when others wouldn't. The 12 k has been a joy. 'All the thirsty quirks, frequent lapping, but it delivers the goods. I've enjoyed my other stones more since adding the N12. Its FAST and effective, so I'll put up with the quirks
