On mine, I didn't find that to be the case... less than a 1/16th (or some millimeters?) would have been more like it. Basically, about 30 minutes on each side (the 4k then the 8k) with 320 grit - very wet, of course. It took about 3 sheets for each side... light, circular patterns. Also in my case I didn't need to bevel any of my edges as the paper seemed to want to curl up... it kinda beveled itself on the edges.

Anywho, after it was done, both sides felt like hones to the finger, not like melon skins. The 4k side feeling like a rougher surface than the 8k side - which basically feels like a sticky, worn boot to the finger... if it were a rock. Kinda hard to describe.
