OIL SOAKED HONE

I have a NOX - ALL hone that is very oil soaked. I use water with my hones and was wondering how to clean this thing up (get the oil out of it) Many thanks, wildhog

I do not think it is possible to clean it completely especially if it is soaked all the way trough. If it is not soaked completely then may be you can lap off the oil contaminated grit from it.

You'd need to find something that will cut the oil. The one old oil stone I have says to clean with Kerosene. You could also try a turpentine or acetone soak

Oven cleaner works well as does brake parts cleaner. Just make sure to use in a well ventilated area.

I have heard others say that oven cleaner will work. So will naptha (lighter fluid) but soak it outside and watch for static or any source of ignition.

You could alwyas continue to use oil. Some old barber hones recomended boiling in vaseline!

If it was mine I would soak in mineral spirits for a day or two. Then I would use easy off oven cleaner. I believe the one with the blue label is the less fume variety. I haven't used the oven cleaner myself but SRP member Howard posted that it worked well back a couple of years ago.

Manythanks guy"s. The oven cleaner sounds good. I have used it in the past to draw oil out of old gun stocks, but never thought about using it on a hone. I will try it tonight, and report back tomorrow with results. Best, wildhog

From my point of view one particular action will not help. Oven cleaner is good. I also used DMT diamond plate 400 grit with dish cleaner Fairy. This lapping gave good results also. Old hones usually have one advantage, they are thick and you can easily remove 2-3 mm of surface to remove oil and make surface smooth and ready for honing.

I looked up NOX-ALL hones and they are barberhones like Swaty's. Can these even be soaked with oil? Just clean the surface of the hone or lap it a bit. I think a lot of barberhones are water repellant.
